This day began early as we met at 7am to bus to the capital of Bavaria, Munich! Although it was early, everyone was pretty excited to see this famous city. Upon arrival, we picked up our tour guide, who explained much of the outstanding architecture, museums and parks we drove by. We had a short stop at Schloss Nymphemburg, one of the truly beautiful royal palaces that dot the landscape in and around Munich. Then back to the city center, where our students were free to explore the city at their leisure. Several of us went to the world famous Hofbrauhaus for lunch, and we all met back at the Marienplatz at 5pm to witness the historic Glockenspiel high atop the old city hall. Munich is always a highlight of our time in Germany, and the 850 year old city did not disappoint us!
Did you know that "corn" is "mais" in German? So if you wanted to be bilingual, you could say that today we did a Mais Maze! And although the grumbling were that this appeared to be too juvenile at first glance (after all, the place was swarmed with elementary aged kids), our group had a much better time than they expected! After all, anything to let the child in you out must be a good thing, right? The point of the maze was to find the four areas where you collected stamps on your card. Return the card with all four stamps and you could get a free ice cream! Many families chose to barbeque right there, completing a fun afternoon.
The best weather during our stay came at the perfect time. A hot and sunny day was the perfect setting for a day of canoeing the river Schussen. Ours was a large group ... 21 canoes ... and we filled the water with splashing, laughter and sore muscles! Our thanks to the Peoria Club for organizig another terrific event. From one moment to the next, we were well looked after. And at the end of the canoeing, we had a beachside pizza party before everyone split up to follow whatever plans were made for the long open weekend.
